The History of the Internet

www.lonja.de

History of the Internet

"History of the Internet is an animated documentary explaining the inventions from time-sharing to file-sharing, from arpanet to internet. The clip shows a brief overview of this history and shall animate to go on discovering the history of the internet. The history is told with the help of the Picol icons, which are also part of my diploma" (www.lonja.de/motion/mo_history_interent.html)

I came across the 'History of the Internet' animation after looking at vector animations for my YCN competition brief. This animation inspired me to create simple vectors drawings for my Science Museum animation that I created.

The idea of using simple vector images allows the user to understand the animation clearer as they are not overwhelmed by too much information. I think that if a more detailed animation was used to illustrate the voice over then the audience would maybe become confused.

The target audience was the main reason for creating a simple animation because it was aimed at children under the aged of 14, whilst I think this animation could be aimed at all age ranges with the clear voice over and simple animation making it easy to understand.

Audi A5 Rhythm Of Lines

www.rhythmoflines.co.uk

The Audi A5 advert is consisted of animated coloured lines dancing smoothly around creating the outline shape of the new Audi A5. The piece is very abstract and is combined with soothing piano music in the background.

The agency behind the advert are Bartle Bogie Hegarty who were asked to, "BBH was tasked to drive the sophisticated brand image by enforcing the Vorsprund durch Technik ethos, as well as highlighting the elegance of the car. Audi also wanted the agency to capitalize and increase the emotional response this car invokes in customers and to celebrate the special shape of the A5, presenting the single minded communication of this in TV, press, outdoor and online". (www.campaignlive.co.uk/thework/news/885650/Audi-rhythm-lines-Bartle-Bogie-Hegarty)

To go along with the theme of rhythm of lines, Audi have created a website to back up the television adverts. On www.rhythmoflines.co.uk, you can create your own lines using the keyboard and mouse and save the animation on the website. I think this is a great idea and can be used by a completely different audience to the target audience. Maybe the target audiences children would use this website, which will be seen by the parents too to promote the car.

The artistic and abstract approach is something I am really influenced and want to incorporate into my final major project. The clean aesthetic and use of lots of white space is also something I am interested in and will again will try and use in my own projects.

Andre Matt & Superelectric

www.andremaat.com
www.superelectric.nl

Andre Maat and Superelectric are a dutch directing duo who created the bizarre music video for the dutch band Kraak & Smaak's song squeeze me. The music video is set in different rooms of a house with a man doing a normal daily routine. However in each frame a flip book is put over the man and unusual things start to happen. You have the man flipping his head in a 360 degree angle and a large sandwich making itself in mid air and landing on the mans plate.

The music video is very unusual but entertaining and funny at the same time. The success from this music video was phenomenal and channel Cult in Italy, which is FOX's alternative channel were determined to use the idea from this and use it in their channel idents. Andre Maat and Superelectric were approached about creating this and they agreed and created over 17 idents using the same technique. These idents included skateboards, Cooking, Birdcages and many more which are revealed the channel's brand and strap line.

I found it very interesting to come across music video and ident because it just goes to show that you can literally create anything when it comes to creating a channel ident. This was very important research for my channel ident and has opened up lots of possibilities for my final piece.

Bupa Advertisements

www.bupa.com
www.studioaka.co.uk

The 'Bupa-Feel Better Campaign' are a set of advertisements, posters and leaflets that are made up of simple geometric shapes that are animated into various characters who all benefit from Bupa care. The advertisements are created by the director of the animation studio, Studio AKA, Grant Orchard and designer Anthony Burrill.

The simplistic style of the animation is something I really admire and can be understood by all ages because the information gets straight to the point. The advertisements have to deal with fragile health topics such as dementia and I feel the way the animations have created these characters helps the audience relate to a character and makes them feel that they are not alone.

The idea of keeping things simple and not over complicating things is something that I can bare in mind when I come to create my final major project. My channel Ident that I am going to create is something that I want to keep very simple because as the saying goes, 'less is more'. I just want the key information about the channel to be present in the ident and not get congested and confusing for the audience.

Picture Box

Picture Box Studios are a local graphic design company from Sale, Cheshire. They were established over 14 years ago and offer services such as Logo Design, Brand Identity, Advertising and Corporate Identity. I drive past the company on a regular basis and became really interested in their work after visiting their website.

I think this company could give me some positive advice because their work is quiet similar to my channel rebrand that I am going to create for my final major project. Once I have created some ideas and rough sketches for my channel ident, I will phone or visit the company to see if they are interested in seeing my previous work and my work in progress.

The Picture Box website also has some very useful facts about brand identity. It explains how a logo will stick with a company for many years and is the first thing a client will see when they see your company. It goes onto say that a logo must be original and spending time on style, colours ad typography is important for the best results. It also includes the progress of designing a logo, it includes research, the brainstorming of ideas, rough concepts, several logo options and amendments.

Scorch Motion

www.scorchdesign.com

Scorch Motion are a London based design company who specialize Motion Graphics, Animation, Idents and Commercials to name a few. They have a very impressive client base that include big companies including Adobe, Channel 4, Nokia, O2, Samsung and Universal Music.

I came across the company when I seen there Motion Graphics commercial for the Nokia 3250 Mobile Phone. The commercial is quiet short but is created in a very unusual way that reminded me of the techniques that Tal Rosner created in his short film, Doppelganger.

Doppelganger2
Doppelganger: Tal Rosner

The commercial starts off with a Mobile Phone which starts rotating and multiplying as it creates unusual shapes and colours. The idea is to promote the phone as a music phone and at the end of the commercial a pair of headphones appear on the phone.

I would love to have the chance have a portfolio crit with this company because they are also involved in channel rebranding, which is something I am going to do for my final major project. When I find out the dates that we are going London with University, I will contact this company to see if they could give me tips and advice for my final major project.

The Box

www.the-box.co.uk

The Box are a design company from Manchester who were formed in 1997. They specialize in 3D animation, Broadcast graphics, Title sequences, TV commercials, Editing and Special FX. The Box has created work for clients such as BBC, Channel 4, Sony Music, Nike, Adidas and MTV2.

I came across the company after watching a program on Sky One called, Man Utd's Greatest Goals. The Box created the title sequence for the program which is done in a very unusual way for a football program. Most other programs normally show only footage of football for example Match of the Day and Soccer AM. However, The Box have created their title sequence in a comic book style using lots of illustrations. The sequence starts of with a sketch of the winning 1968 team and then turns into real footage as the team lifts the trophy. This technique is used throughout with different footballers changing from an illustrations to actual footage. I really like this technique and the comic book format works really well along side the mixed media piece.

I really like this company as a whole, and I would love the opportunity to meet with someone from the company to show my work so far and ask for tips and advice for my final major project. As I develop my ideas for my major project I will email the company to see if there is a chance to meet with someone.
